In 1817 - 78 the Howgate Polar expedition wintered in Cumberland Sound, Baffin Island, at the little harbour of Annanactook. Included in the personnel of the expedition were two scientists, Sherman and Kumlien, who were responsible for the meteorological and biological observations.
