Esophageal cancer (EC) is one of the world's deadliest malignancies. Despite technological advancements in surgery and other therapies, the 5-year survival rate is less than 30%. Due to the lack of reliable diagnostic markers, EC remains an aggressive disease capable of forming secondary tumours in many locations including lymph nodes (LNs). In fact, over 80% of esophageal cancer patients have LN metastasis and the presence of LN metastasis at surgery is one of the greatest predictors of poor survival outcome.
