My thesis explores the aesthetic theory and performative expectations of the male and female practitioners in tantric Buddhist sexual rites. My work examines the erotic context of later tantric Buddhist practice as found in Vanaratna's (1384 -1468) fifteenth century Tibetan meditation manual (sadhana) to the rare, erotic form of the goddess Vajravarahi (Adamantine Sow), called Vajravilasini (Adamantine Beauty), entitled Vajravilasini namah Vajravarahi sadhana (The sadhana of Vajravarahi named Vajravilasini). An eighth century poem is preserved in the consort practice section of this sadhana, attributed to the Indian mahasiddha (great accomplished one) Lakrminkara.
