Pulsars are highly magnetised rotating neutron stars that emit regular,periodic pulses of radiation across a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Originally only observed in radio waves, pulsars are now regularly seen to emit x-ray and gamma-ray radiation. Although they were discovered over forty years ago and the number of known pulsars now exceeds 2000, the processes that generate the observed emission from pulsars are still poorly understood.This work describes the detection of emission from the Crab Pulsar above 100 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), which is the highest radiation energy ever detected from a pulsar.
