The quality of major reanalysis datasets is first evaluated for the Northern-Hemisphere intraseasonal variability of Stratospheric Vortex Weakening (SVW)and Intensication (SVI) events using global positioning system (GPS) radio-occultation temperature soundings. The biases are small in comparison to the magnitude of the anomalies encountered during SVW and SVI events. With a greater confidence in the ability of reanalysis projects to reliably capture SVWevents, we evaluate the necessary conditions for the downward propagation of the anomalies from the stratosphere to the troposphere by separating SVW events into propagating and non-propagating categories.
