This study offers an analysis of the representation of chronic and episodic pain in narrative life-writing. I have surveyed six contemporary memoirs that are each concerned with the author's chronic pain experience. In the field of pain studies – both in the humanities and medical sciences – the adequacy of language to represent pain is a vexed issue. Many assert that pain is difficult to represent in language because, in part, we fail to experience it as a meaningful event. Narrative is the most common mode of communication with which we express events that happened in the past; it thus offers writers ways to represent their pain in the same respect, with the same effects, as other less problematic past happenings.
