La quête spensérienne: le traducteur et l'allégorie de l'erreur et du désespoir à l'intérieur du livre 1 de La Reine des fées

Divided in (5) chapters and followed by our translation of Book I of The Faerie Queene, our thesis is about the failure of the translation project of Spenser in French and the justification of a new project focusing on the quest, an essential aspect of Spenser's poem, despite the fact it has been neglected by the French translators. In Chapter 1, we bring the translation of Spenser back to life by examining the author and his work, his influence and the reception of his work, and his fate outside the boundaries of England, while taking a look at the genre of The Faerie Queene, its form and its project. In this chapter, which serves as an introduction to our thesis, we pay particular attention to the expression "poet's poet", which is at the heart of the problem of perception of Spenser's work. In Chapter 2, we take a closer look at the narrative of Book I by analysing the heroes and adversaries of the story. By doing so, we establish the quest of the characters, the true core of The Faerie Queene. In Chapter 3, we take another look at the subject of the quest, but from the point of view of the reader. We thus detach ourselves from the story to focus on the allegorical dimension of the poem and the engaged position of the reader toward the poem. In Chapter 4, we look at the quest from the point of view of the poet. We look at the challenge that The Faerie Queene poses, in terms of genre, and at the interventions of Spenser within the story. Once these three aspects of the quest are well established, we take a look, in Chapter 5, at how the different French projects of translation failed, at how they didn't respect the quest, as we demonstrated. We consider different hypotheses that could explain this failure and the question of translation of poetry. Through this analysis, we establish the bases for our own project of translation, which respects both the spirit of the theories of translation of poetry and the spirit of Spenser's text. Our translation of Book I follows, written according to these principles.Divisée en (5) cinq chapitres et accompagnée de notre traduction du livre I de The Faerie Queene, notre thèse porte sur l'échec du projet de translation de Spenser en français et sur la justification d'un nouveau projet de traduction axé sur le respect de la quête, une composante essentielle de l'œuvre spensérienne, pourtant négligée par les traducteurs français. Au chapitre 1, nous réamorçons la translation de Spenser en examinant l'auteur et son œuvre, son influence et sa réception, son destin à l'étranger, tout en jetant un regard sur le genre de The Faerie Queene, sa forme et son projet. Dans ce chapitre qui nous sert d'introduction, nous retenons notamment l'expression « poète du poète », qui se trouve au cœur de l'erreur de perception de Spenser. Au chapitre 2, nous examinons de plus près la trame narrative du livre I en analysant les héros et adversaires qui peuplent le récit. Nous établissons ainsi la quête des personnages, le véritable noyau de The Faerie Queene. Au chapitre 3, nous abordons à nouveau cette même quête, mais du point de vue du lecteur. Nous nous détachons donc du récit pour observer davantage la dimension allégorique de l'œuvre et la position engagée du lecteur face à l'œuvre. Au chapitre 4, nous abordons la quête du point de vue du poète. Nous examinons le défi que présente The Faerie Queene, notamment en termes de genre, et les interventions de Spenser dans le récit. Une fois ces trois aspects de la quête bien établis, nous examinons, au chapitre 5, en quoi les différents projets de translation français ont échoué, en quoi ils ne respectent pas la quête, telle que nous l'avons démontrée. Nous nous attardons à diverses hypothèses pouvant expliquer cet échec ainsi qu'à la question de la traduction de la poésie. À travers cette analyse, nous établissons les bases de notre propre projet de traduction, qui respecte à la fois l'esprit des théories de la traduction de la poésie et celui de l'œuvre spensérienne.
