Through primary production – the biochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to synthesize biomass – large amounts of oxidants such as molecular oxygen, sulfate and ferric iron have accumulated in the ocean, atmosphere and crust, fundamentally altering the chemical environment of the earth’s surface.
