A survey on the research project 'Automatization of navigable waterways‘ is given and the results obtained until now are reported. First a complete position determination of a ship by an electrical pilot cable is described. Then a state space controller is designed, which operates on the rudder of the ship, such that automatic navigation with a test ship is made possible on a test waterway with a length of 4 km. The results of the automatic test runs are discussed. (7 References
