The interaction of activated carbon with water is dominated through acidic and basic surface groups. We estimated the concentration of these groups on 15 active carbons by titration and studied their influence on pH of carbon-water suspensions, heat of immersion of carbons into water and on phenol adsorption from aqueous solutions. It is found that acidic groups interact with water more strongly than basic ones. This has the consequence that acidic carbons are less useful for phenol adsorption from water
