A partir de l'observation que dans sports collectifs les récompenses directes sont presques indépendantes de la performance, à la différence des sports individuels, l'auteur s'appuie sur la théorie du tournoi (contest theory) et examine le caractère d'incitation des accords de partage des revenus qui dépendent ou non de la performance. L'analyse s'étend aux revenus dépendant de l'équilibre comme les contrats de télédiffusion
