DESA1002 'Continuous City' Marie-Claire Dent

Over the 12 weeks of the semester a major design project was created. Each week a specific exercise was done which helped in determining a final design project. My final project is a Health Spa and Gymnasium which reflected the neighboring water. It is characterized by rippled reflective glass windows, a pontoon and floating treatment pods. The objective of my building is to provide an intimate relaxing environment in which people can enjoy the spa and gym services on offer. As my building is right on the water I want to reinforce the connection between the lake and the structure. The main feature of the building is a it rippled reflective glass facade which allows the lake to be represented on the front of the building. The rippled texture alludes to ripples in a lake. The intensity diffusing and you move away from the centre. The cladding on the back of the structure consists of stone panels. The stone panels were chosen due to their insulation properties and sense of luxury. Another key feature of the up market Health Spa is a floating pontoon with individual treatment hubs which link the building to the water in a more literal sense. The building provides a private spa for individuals who wish to have a quiet solitary experience. There is also an emphasis on served spaces and separate male and female floors. The structural system is understated and simple with little ornamentation. It consists of post and beams, concrete floor plates and a concrete elevator core. The load bearing walls are situated at the back of the building, blocking out the city views. While the beams are located around the front of the structure. The roof is also a key feature. It alludes to a birds wing flying over the water
