La costruzione di nuovi ribosomi costituisce per ogni cellula un importante investimento energetico, necessario per assicurare l’elevata capacità di sintesi proteica richiesta quando le condizioni di crescita sono in grado di sostenere un’intensa attività metabolica. Dato il notevole dispendio di energia che comporta, la biogenesi del ribosoma deve essere invece tempestivamente repressa in caso di stress o di carenza di nutrienti, in modo da permettere la sopravvivenza delle cellule grazie all’indirizzamento delle scarse risorse disponibili verso le esigenze metaboliche imposte dal cambiamento delle condizioni di crescita.
