Il bisfenolo A e' monomero che nasce come estrogeno di sintesi ma che a partire dagli anni 50 dello scorso secolo viene utilizzato nella sintesi dei policarbonati e resine epossidiche. Impiegato quindi nella produzione di contenitori e rivestimenti alimentari ed altri tipi di plastiche, e' un prodotto che e' presente ampiamente in ogni parte dell'ambiente. La sua estrogenicita' ne determina l'appartenenza ai cosi' detti "distruttori endocrini", sostanze che sono in grado di mimare gli ormoni endogeni e quindi di alterare il corretto funzionamento fisiologico.
