The main object of the database is the individual seismogenic source, intended as a simplified and georeferenced 3D representation of a fault plane. Individual seismogenic sources (GG sources) are identified through geological and geophysical investigations, are capable of primary slip during a large earthquake and are assumed to exhibit “characteristic” behavior with respect to rupture length/width and expected magnitude. Seismogenic sources that cannot be reliably assessed using geological and seismological data are derived from quantitative treatment of historical earthquake data (MW, MP, and MD sources).
