Glasses containing nanometer-sized metal clusters exhibit intensity-dependent refractive index values several orders of magnitude larger than that of silica glass, owing to dielectric and quantum confinement effects. Transition metals are particularly interesting since they also exhibit peculiar magnetic properties.
