This essay was written on the invitation by the scientific committee of the Victorian Review. Together with 6 Victorian scholars I took part in a forum on teaching Victorian authors in academic courses, considering the implications that their texts have for today's non-British readers. I have written about some lectures I gave on John Ruskin for my MA course on Victorian culture, focussing on Ruskin's more popular books on Venice, namely the Stones of Venice and St. Mark's Rest
