Diplomsko delo zajema opis razvoja geodetskih instrumentov in opis nekaterih instrumentov, ki so trenutno prisotni na tržišču. Razvoj v grobem temelji na štirih obdobjih: arhaičnem, optičnem, elektrooptičnem in elektronskem. Ob koncu poglavij so navedene specifikacije instrumentov vodilnih proizvajalcev. Le-ti pa danes na trgu ponujajo več kot samo merjenje točk, saj nudijo tudi slikovno podporo merjenju, združevanje TPS in GPS sistema ter terestrično lasersko skeniranje, ki predstavlja eno izmed novejših tehnik zajemanja podatkov o objektih v prostoru in o prostoru samem.
