At least 50% case of sterile couples are caused by a male factor. In men with azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia, a connection with microdeletions in the region AZF on the chromosome Y was found. AZF is divided into three non-overlapping regions - AZFa, AZFb and AZFc. The main candidate genes are as follows: UPS9Y and DBY in AZFa, RBMY in AZFb and DAZ in AZFc. In males with AZF deletions, testicular histology varies considerably, from total absence of germ cells through maturation arrest to hypospermatogenesis. Correlation between localization of deletions in AZFa, AZFb, AZFc and histological finding was not confirmed.
