In recent years the possibilities of professional training of hearing impaired teachers have been raised in the Czech Republic. New study programs for deaf students have been created and advisory centers for handicapped students have been established in a number of education centers. Deaf students have now the opportunity to acquire the qualification they need and to assert themselves as teachers at special schools. Qualified deaf teachers could be a real model to help deaf pupils to learn the sign language, develop their social and cultural identity and improve their self-esteem.
