The first part of the study is concerned with the sorption of heavy metals from ethylenediamine complex. Copper, zinc and nickel were chosen for the sorption experiments. Experimental results show that carboxylic cation exchanger, iminodiacetate chelating cation exchanger, polycarboxylic oligo(ethyleneamine) resin and sulphonic resin are efficient. The application of oligo(ethyleneamine) resins in the free base form is efficient only for Zn 2+. The influence of solution flow rate in the range of 6-18 BV/h on the breakthrough capacities was determined. The breakthrough capacities of cation exchangers are in the majority of cases not influenced by solution flow rate because their sorption rate is high enough. The sorption on picolylamine resin is effective only at flow rate 6BV/h. The effect of pH value on the sorption capacity in the range of 5 to 8 is following. The breakthrough capacities are increasing with increasing pH value. Experimental results show that separation of metals from ligand is effective on picolylamine resin in the protonated form and on oligo(ethyleneamine) resins at solution pH=5-6,5. Heavy metals are taken up completely from the solution by cation exhcangers. The breakthrough capacity decreases with increasing chelating ability of ethyleneamine complexes in the solution. Sorption of copper, zinc and nickel was carried out from solutions containing these ethyleneamine complexes: EDA=ethyleneamine DETA=diethylenetriamine TETA=triethylenatetramine TEPA=tetraethylenepentamine The second part of the study is concerned with the sorption of matals from bimetallic solutions containing an ethylenediamine ligand. It was studied: a/ the sorption of both metals from solution b/ the selective removal of one metal from solution c/ separation of single metals from ethylenediamine ligand Sorption of metals from bimetalic solution and EDA lignad was quantitative. The quantitative separation of heavy metals is chieved only in the solution. Separation of metals in the resin phase is not achieved. In the third part was shown that standard carboxylic or iminodiacetate cation exchanger can be efficiently used to remove heavy metals from strong anionic complexing agents (citrate, NTA, EDTA). The principle of this sorption is that suitable oligo(ethyleneamine) lignad is added into the treated solution containing anionic complex. Anionic metal complexes are gradually and continously transformed into cationic complexes by addition of oligo(ethyleneamine) lignad until the heavy metals are completely removed from the solution by cation exchangers. The condition and mechanism of this recomplexation process were studied in this work. Sorption of metals from citrate complexes by the addition of EDA ligand into the citrate solution is quantitative and high breakthrough capacities were achieved. Carboxylic cation exchanger removes from NTA solution only copper when is added TEPA ligand into loading solution. IDA resin takes up copper quantitatively when EDA ligand is added into loading NTA solution. Sorption of Ni2+ from NTA on carboxylic resin is not quantitative when oligo(ethyleneamine) ligand is added into the treated solution. In the case of Ni2+ from EDTA, the sorption efficiency of IDA resin and carboxylic cation exchanger are the same as sorption of Ni2+ from NTA on carboxylic resin. Sorption of metal is only partial which corresponded to the amount present in the cationic complex. For the quantitative sorption of Ni2+ uptake on IDA resin it is necessary to add into the treated NTA solution the TEPA ligand.
