The introductory part covers roughly the period from the famous Meiji Restoration up to Japans capitulation in the aftermath of her defeat in the Second World War. It is comprised of two studies. The aim of the first study is primarily to acquaint with the conflicts occurring at the time the modern Japanese state was forming, to briefly sketch out the issues involved in its temporary adoption of a constitutional and democratic form of government. The second study analyzes the sources of Japanese expansionism and militarism, whose goals were perhaps first explicitly formulated in the well-known Tanaka memorandum. The central part of the dissertation attracts attention to the political and economic aspects of the subsequent occupation of Japan, starting with the capitulation act and ending with the signing of a multilateral peace treaty in San Francisco in 1951. The third study introduces the theme of the occupation of Japan with a look at the spectacular capitulation act of September 2. The fourth study takes up the question of the Tokyo Trial with Japanese war criminals. The fifth study is dedicated to the large Japanese family industrial and financial combines known as zaibatsu and their dissolution. The sixth study discusses the historical and political cicumstances of the origin of both Japanese constitution. The seventh study discusses the postwar internal political situation in Japan and the return to parliamentary democracy based on the free competition of political parties. The eighth study completes the entire Central Part with an analysis of the 1951 San Francisco peace accords. The ninth study deals with the history, merits, rules and forms, as well as problems and prospects of economic assistance to developing countries. The final, tenth study tries in its first two sections to answer the question whether and why the centuries-long economic and political hegemony of Euroatlantic civilization has been non violently overturned.
