Hypertension is the second most common form of adult cardiovascular disease in the general population. Based on the past two decades of research on blood pressure (BP) in children and young adults, the following results may be noted. 1) Primary hypertension begins in early childhood. 2) Essential hypertension is identifiable early in life and is predictive of adult hypertension. Tracking or persistence of BP levels within ranks compared with general distribution, provides some evidence that children in the high BP distribution may become adults with recognisable hypertension. 3) Hypertensive disease and target organ changes can be detected in childhood with early onset of hypertension. There are anatomic cardiovascular-renal changes in adolescents and young adults associated with high blood pressure levels. Echocardiographic studies have shown the BP levels persisting at 95 th percentile are associated with increased left ventricular measurements. 4) Hypertensive cardiovascular disease is preventable largely through environmental factors: prevention of obesity, altering electrolyte intake and increased activity.Available from STL Prague, CZ / NTK - National Technical LibrarySIGLECZCzech Republi
