Leptin is a peptide hormone produced primarily in adipocytes. It is the peripheral signal informing the hypothalamic center of satiety about the status of fat reserves in the organism. So called ob/ob mice with a mutation in the leptin gene have a complete lack of functional leptin and are characterized by severe obesity, hyperphagia, and infertility. In humans, obesity is associated more with resistance to the effects of leptin than its insufficient synthesis. The influence of sex hormones on leptin production has been proven. During puberty, during individual phases of the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and in menopause, the levels of leptin change dramatically. On the basis of current knowledge it is puberty and are also necessary for the process of the normal menstrual cycle.
