Sistema Integrado de Conversao Analogico-Digital com Reconfiguracao Funcional e Testabilidade Digital

Data converters are essential parts of mixed analogue-digital integrated circuits, for they are the key elements which provide the exchange of information between the digital and analogue domains and whose characteristics are crucial for the overall system performance. The work reported in this Dissertation concerns the investigation of circuit design, simulation and test techniques for a high-speed integrated data conversion system, where reconfigurability into both analogue-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analogue (D/A) conversion modes has been introduced to allow fully-digital testability. The fundamental aspects of A/D conversion are firstly introduced, and several high-speed A/D converter architectures are reviewed and compared with respect to their main characteristics. Such A/D converter architectures are shown to be described in a systematic, modular way based on only two suitable selected mixed-mode functional primitives. The models developed for such primitives also allow to simulate the converter architectures at the behavioural level. A reconfigurable converter architecture is then proposed and the resulting D/A-A/D testing loop is theoretically analysed and explored with behavioural simulations in order to establish a fully-digital testing methodology.
