In this dissertation, a new type of parallel image processor is presented. This type of processors has partially shared memory MIMD architectures with orthogonal access to a two-dimensional array of memory modules. The most interesting feature of this architecture lies in the fact that it allows the processing elements to access large neighbourhoods of memory array. Compared with traditional orthogonal architectures, the new architecture performs better with respect to local processing. It is to be noted that this improvement does not imply a significant increase in the complexity of the orthogonal processors.
