This study consists on the application of mathematical morphology to study and to represent structures. The study means here the characterisation of the structures that constitute a digital image while the representation means their modelling and simulation. The morphological characterisation is divided in three parts: filtering, identification and measurement. In the morphological filtering phase is presented a way of filtering some information and simultaneously creating more regular objects, and also a procedure for extracting topographical features on an image according to its size.
