O terciario e a condicao da cidade

The central question of this dissertation is the analysis of the interaction between tertiary activities and urban design, so as to propose contributions towards a better performance within that interaction. Urban space and its design are therefore the fundamental raw-material of this endeavour, in this case, applied to the activity generally considered as the most structuring with regards to the crucial areas of the city: i.e. the tertiary sector activities. A definition of that sector is provided, and today's situation in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon described. Through historical analysis, theoretical concepts and ways of designing and relating to "tertiary urban space" are establihed in order to learn from the past. The conexions betwen the structural level and that of urban design are established and the determinants of the relationship are analysed. The question of form and function is alsoconfronted in an attempt to define quality. The concepts which evolved from this studies are then applied to a specific metropolitan area - Lisbon.
