The mechanism of the structure formation of polymer hydrogel drilling fluids has been studied. It has been established that the hydrogel fluids have the rheologic properties which provide a minimum viscosity at a high initial filtration in the bit area and a high viscosity at a low yield of water when moving in the hole clearance. The commercial tests and introduction of the polymer hydrogel fluid at the sites of the "LuKoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft" Joint-Stock Company have made it possible to reduce the time and materials by 23%, increase the mechanical drilling rate by 11 to 40% and bit sinking by 18 to 240%.
