The investigation is concerned with the apple-tree collection (5500 species and 260 subspecies). The object of investigation is identification of the diversity of the Malus species existing in the european part of Russia, Ukraine, Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East, classification of apple trees, revelation of the origin of domestic apple trees and sources possessing a complex of economically valuable features for selection. The researchers have newly classified apple tree species, obtained unique data on the origin of the domestic apple tree, discovered the original locus and ancestor of the cultured apple tree species and studied the problems of evolution and phylogeny of the genus.
