The investigation object is the lake phytoplankton. The aim is to determine the regularities of changing species composition, structure and production possibilities of the phytoplankton in the lakes of different climatic zones during oligotrophic and eutrophic succession; to evaluate the basic ecological factors determining these changes. It has been revealed that the regularities of changing phytoplankton associations in the lakes of different geographical zones are determined by a receipt level of the biogenic elements, first of all, general phosphorus.
