The glucose facilitator of Z. mobilis has been characterized with respect to its applicability as an alternative transport system in Escherichia coli, its transport properties, its influence on the glucose conversion and on the substrate spectrum of Z. mobilis. Functional expression of the glucose transporter of Z. mobilis leads to restoration of glucose and fructose uptake in E. coli mutants and provides evidence for its facilitator action. The studies with the heterologic E. coli transport system revealed that the glucose facilitator is also able to transport mannose and xylose, and in addition, competition studies point to galactose, glucoseamine, sorbose and arabinose as substrates.
