The genotoxic potency of extracted diesel soot and titanium dioxide particles of different size (TiO_2 P25, P805 and TiO_2 anatase) as well as quartz should be analysed in vitro in this research project. Rat and human cells from the respiratory tract of epithelial and mesenchymal origin were used to study cellular effects. The results of these studies should provide some information on the influence of particle size and type on cyto- and genotoxic effects. The aspects of cell and species-specific reactions were also taken into consideration. The treatment of the 4 cell lines with extracted diesel soot particles induced cytotoxic reactions independently of the species of the donor.
