The aerospace industry plus its appropriate defense component must to an increasing extent be a European topic. Such an industry, which is strategic in terms of security and economic policy and whose markets are almost exclusively defined by political decisions, must perpetuate its dialogue with politics. In 10 theses, these basic ideas are explained in more detail. Some of the main points under consideration include: the European aerospace industry is burdened with a severe structure problem; consequences of the political fragmentation of Europe make a joint research and technology policy more difficult; competitiveness calls for orders of magnitude, which cannot be achieved by national efforts (antitrust laws) alone; the necessity of intensified aerospace research by the EU also has to be considered against the background of the current weakness of the Dollar, which causes heavy troubles primarily to the aerospace enterprises in Germany and France, but also in other European countries.
