The first part of the present report contains a description of methods for determining the performance characteristics of airbreathing propulsion systems which are suitable for hypersonic flight Mach numbers. These performance characteristics are used as a basis for assessment of horizontal takeoff configurations of future space transport systems having airbreathing propulsion systems, which were subjected to analysis within the scope of the AZURA study. Three different types of airbreathing engines have been selected: turbojet/ducted fan turbine engine with ramjet in a parallel arrangement, turborocket, and turbo-expander engine (ATE).
