A combined approach for Mars-94 orbit determination and photogrammetric bundle adjustment

Im Rahmen der bevorstehenden Mars-94-Mission bieten zwei deutsche Kameras -die High Resolution Stereo Camera HRSC und der Wide Angle Optoelectronic Stereo Scanner WAOSS - eine neuartige Moeglichkeit zur direkten stereoskopischen Abbildung der Marsoberflaeche. Im Gegensatz zu herkoemmlichen Kameras mit flaechenhaften Sensoren basieren HRSC und WAOSS auf einem 3-Zellen-CCD-Konzept, bei dem der Bildaufbau durch zeilenweises Abtasten quer zur Flugrichtung erfolgt. Zur photogrammetrischen Prozessierung der HRSC und WAOSS Bilder wird eine Erweiterung von bereits frueher entwickelten Verfahren fuer MEOSS und MOMS-02 vorgeschlagen. Sie dient zur Vermeidung von Problemen, die sich im Zuge der Mars-94-Mission aus einer schwachen Oberflaechentextur, ungenauer Kontrollinformation und dem Fehlen eines inertialen Navigationssystems ergeben koennen. Zu diesem Zweck wird der bestehende Buendelausgleichsalgorithmus fuer 3-Zeilen-Stereobilder durch eine strenge Modellierung der Satellitenbewegung ergaenzt. Mit diesem Ansatz wird die korrekte Verwendung von Bahninformation im Buendelausgleich sichergestellt, waehrend umgekehrt photogrammetrische Bildinformation zur Bahnverbesserung und zur Schaetzung wissenschaftlicher Parameter des Mars dienen kann. Da Mars-94 die erste Mission zum Planeten Mars nach Viking 1 und 2 in den Jahren 1976-1979 darstellen wird, wurde besonderes Augenmerk auf eine Verbesserung von Mars-Rotationselementen durch kombinierte Auswertung von Radiotrackingdaten und Bildern gelegt. (orig.)Within the forthcoming Mars-94 mission two German cameras, the High Resolution Stereo Camera HRSC and the Wide Angle Optoelectronic Stereo Scanner WAOSS, will provide a novel opportunity for direct stereo imaging of the Martian surface. In contrast to traditional frame cameras, both HRSC and WAOSS are based on a three ine CCD concept and operated according to the pushbroom principle. For the photogrammetric processing of HRSC and WAOSS images an extension of previously developed algorithms for MEOSS and MOMS-02 is proposed, in order to avoid problems that may arise from a weak surface texture, low precision ground control information and the lack of an inertial navigation system in the context of the Mars-94 mission. To this end, the existing bundle adjustment algorithm for 3-line stereo images is supplemented by a rigorous dynamical modeling of the spacecraft motion to account for orbital constraints. This approach ensures the proper utilization for orbit determination based trajectory information in the photogrammetric bundle adjustment and, vice-versa, allows the use of photogrammetric image information to improve the orbit determination and support the estimation of Mars science parameters. Since Mars-94 will be the first mission to Mars following Viking 1 and 2 in 1976-1979, special attention is given to the potential improvement of Mars rotation parameters in the combined analysis of radio tracking data and HRSC/WAOSS images.
