SCIAMACHY. Phase B Final report

SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography) is an instrument for the observation of the earth's atmosphere. The SCIAMACHY instrument will be used to measure a large number of trace gases related to ozone chemistry and greenhouse effect, and physical parameters like temperature and pressure. The measurements, in the spectral range 240 - 2400 nm, will not only be performed within the stratosphere and higher atmospheric layers, but also in the troposphere, where immision of trace gases, anthropogenetic or natural in origin, occurs. SCIAMACHY will probe the atmosphere from an 800 km orbit, from where it will cover the whole earth within three days. Using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) and Back Scattered UV and Visible (BUV) measuring techniques, atmospheric absorption lines will be analyzed. Besides many other atmospheric constituents, main emphasis will be put on the measurement of gases like ozone (O_3), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH_4) and nitric oxides (NO, NO_x), i.e., on gases which are considered as main causes for the greenhouse effect, or for the decomposition of the stratospheric ozone layer. The instrument consists of two main groups, the optical sensor and the data and control electronics. The central funtional untis of the instrument are Scanner, Spectrometer and Data Electronics.
