Although numerous concepts for the manufacture of superconducting three-terminal devices exist, none of them has led to a useful device in low-temperature microelectronics up to now. This deficiency is an overwhelming obstacle for the spread of superconducting electronics and the combination with semiconducting electronics. The aim of this R+D project was to estimate the potential and the ultimate limits of superconducting field effect transistors on the base of YBa_2Cu_3O_7 (YBCO) and to compare them with the results which are feasible at the present state-of-the-art of the thin film technology.
