This paper will present an approach to a decentralized intersection management which does not require any additional infrastructure at the intersection and which can operate in today's traffic so as to increase safety and avoid congestion. The basic idea is the use of a token-ring-based communication protocol among autonomous vehicles in a specified zone around the intersection. Thus, essential information about current position, velocity, and acceleration are exchanged in view of a decision on whether or not to enter the intersection. Collision avoidance is ensured by means of semaphor-based algorithms which allow only one vehicle at a time to stay in a critical intersection segment. Simulation results will prove the effects of different s...
