Digitization of all video services has become a worldwide objective. This can be explained by the introduction of digital networks like ISDN or B-ISDN or digital storage media (CD-ROM, digital VCR) on the one hand and by the improved possibilities of large scale integration on silicon on the other hand. This development which has been stimulated by the situation in the U.S. is now also taking place in the field of TV and HDTV broadcast over terrestrial, cable and satellite channels. The main subjects of this project were theoretical investigation and computer simulations of techniques for digital TV and HDTV transmission over terrestrial, satellite and cable channels and their technological implementation. The primary objectives of the project, which is part of the joint research project 'Hierarchical digital TV transmission -HDTVT', was the development of a system proposal for hierarchical and compatible TV/HDTV coding. This proposal is the basis for a codec, that will be realized at HHI as part of a demonstrator for a complete digital transmission chain.
