Digitization of all video services has become a worldwide objective. This can be explained by the introduction of digital networks like ISDN or B-ISDN or digital storage media (CD-ROM, digital VCR) on the one hand and by the improved possibilities of large scale integration on silicon on the other hand. This development which has been stimulated by the situation in the U.S. is now also taking place in the field of TV and HDTV broadcast over terrestrial, cable and satellite channels.
