The most important activity within the project was to develop a concept for the realization of intrinsic safe fieldbus structures. The results of the investigations, which were performed together with the German PTB (Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt), influenced the work of international standardization bodies. A second emphasis was the application of fieldbus. To realize general user surfaces for various devices a mechanism was developed, which offers the capability to describe the structure of data sets, that an operating device can interpret the data of a field device and display it in a way that a human being can understand it. In addition studies were carried out to see which kind of a bus protocol fits best to the needs of the application functionalities in control and instrumentation.
