Part of the confusion about discourse relations in general seems to stem from the fact that in many cases they are not signalled in the texts under regard. Instead, a large amount of intuition and interpretation has to be used. To minimize this unwanted effect some authors have recently proposed to start from linguistic clues, especially cue words. In this study we have adopted this approach, which is especially valuable for the analysis of the CONCESSION relation because this is in most cases explicitly signalled by linguistic markers. German seems to be especially rich in this respect. As can easily be shown, a single CONCESSION relation can be expressed in literally hundreds of ways in German.
