This report disucsses the objectives and research results of a project on linear and nonlinear ARROW waveguides and couplers in epitaxial AlGaAs/GaAs structures which was supported by the Volkswagen Foundation within the framework of the photonics point-of-main-effort program (ARROW - Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide). A basic survey informs about the physical mode of operation of antiresonant leaky-mode waveguides by presenting numerical and experimental studies.
