Methoden und Untersuchungen zur Optimierung des Datendurchsatzes in ATM-Netzen

In order to establish ATM in local area networks, methods were developed enabling ATM to be used by classical communication protocols. The following three methods allow existing applications to transparently make use of ATM: Classical IP over ATM by IETF, LAN Emulation of the ATM forum, and its extension MPOA (Multi-Protocol Over ATM). In this report, the ATM basics are presented and the previously mentioned methods are described with special regard to performance aspects. Furthermore, native ATM services are explained as well as the ATM API (Application Programming Interface) on which these services are based. In order to set the transfer rates achievable by the ATM API into relation to the other methods, a suitable test program was developed. The ATM API transfer rates are then compared with the transfer rates achieved by a similar test program based on Berkeley-sockets using Classical IP and LAN Emulation.
