Electric power supply systems for coal mines in Germany from 2003 must adapt to developments in mining and to changing standards. Future systems should be more efficient, more compact, and with less network losses. Automatic network protection of underground networks of 5 kV and more is problematic due to economic considerations. Advantages are found in higher safety, protective earthing and faster information on disturbances.
