The use and function of hot ceramic structures in future will be determined by the availability of additional hot components (e.g. bearings, seals and fasteners) made of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) especially if the hot structures shall be adjustable as e.g. required for hypersonic air intakes or for control surfaces of re-entry vehicles. Such additional hot ceramic components which can resist temperatures up to 1600 C in air did not exist at the beginning of this work. Especially without bearings, seals and fasteners, the above mentioned applications cannot be realised.
