An algorithm using a variational method for generating quadrilateral meshes for two-dimensional polygonal regions is presented. In a first stage the possibly multiply connected region is decomposed into simple regions. This decomposition uses a variational method for selecting appropriate cuts dividing the region. The simple regions are then filled with quadrilaterals using an advancing front technique. Experimental results of the quality of the resulting meshes are provided both for quasi-uniform and highly non-uniform meshes.
