Selected restoration techniques for stained glass windows were compared with regard to their effectiveness and their damage potential. All investigations were carried out in the laboratory using model glasses which are sensitive to corrosion and which show similar corrosion phenomena as medieval glasses. The glass samples were cleaned in various test series in order to compare different 'dry' and 'wet' methods. The mechanical cleaning techniques were mainly carried out by restorers. As a result it became evident that the choice of an appropriate tool is almost as important as the way the restorer handles it. The interaction between chemical cleaning solutions and glass can be rather neglegible (as it is the case of organic solvents) or very...
