In order to contribute to the design of full-ceramic rolling bearings, the mechanical behaviour of a silicon nitride material (SN 3208) under rolling bearing-typical stress situations has been studied in model experiments and described by methods of fracture mechanics. For a stepwise approach to the complex real situation, the following model systems have been treated: static ball-plate contact, sliding ball-plate contact, static ball-track contact, rolling contact, ball bearing systems. Results derived in this study have been applied to a rolling bearer model system, and the first design criteria have been derived.
