The diametral compression test for material strength measurements has been subjected to a 3d finite element analysis. It is shown that in the case of such materials in which already by slight deformation tensions in the order of magnitude of the ultimate strength are created, the compression test yields no reliable results. This test is therefor not applicable for the testing of most of the ceramic materials. It may still be used for materials of low elasticity such as reinforced plastics. For future test analyses it is supposed to study the influence of the geometry of the contact faces.
